This is the way I live (name that song)

Remember as a kid when you would go to friends houses and you’d see how differently other families lived? The funny thing about being a kid in someone elses home is that no one cleans up when you come over. You get to see other families as they truly live.

I had one friend whose whole family was vegetarian and they were very artsy people (read: hippies). Every time I’d go over to their house I would marvel at the random clutter. Our house was always clean and nothing was out of place. Aside from lots of dog hair, it probably looked a bit like a pottery barn ad (Good job Mom, not sure how you pulled that off with 4 dogs and 2 kids).

Naveed and I have lived together for 3 months now.
By all accounts, I am a grown up. I have a salary, my own apartment, and a live-in boyfriend. Hell, I’m even responsible for another living being. But sometimes I see pictures on Pinterest or on other blogs and I just feel inadequate.
Am I the only grown up whose house is always a disaster?

My apartment could be cute. When we first moved in, I spent lots of time (and money) making it look cozy and homey. We had a cream colored shag area rug, nice throw pillows, soft blankets, and an awesome recliner. One week with Archie and that carpet was rolled up and in the basement. The dining room table is constantly being used as a staging area for something, right now it’s the pile of purchased Christmas gifts and wrapping supplies.

Since I’d like to eliminate some some of the shame of being a slob, here’s a glimpse into my home as it currently is:

Yes, that is my coffee table. Yes, that is how it always looks.
The white table in the top right has a cute basket for mail. Really it’s where we dump all the mail and never look at it again. The cute lamps on either side of the TV above them mantle? Those are scarf/purse hangers, my friends. And do Archie’s toys have a designated area? Nope.

Do you think cleanliness is learned, innate, or acquired with age? At some point will I grow out of this? Or perhaps, as I theorize, most peoples houses actually do look like this, but they always clean up before other people come over.  I figure, a home is a home and it should be lived in. If it doesn’t bother me and it doesn’t bother Nav and only rarely does anyone come over, we can just leave it like this right?

Now tell me, does your house look as cute as Pinterest would lead me to believe other peoples houses look? Tell me we aren’t the only couple whose combined sloppiness is getting a bit out of hand!

  • haha I can name that song!!! I wrote a post yesterday with this title and have had the song stuck in my head since then. I didn’t think anyone else got the reference haha! and don’t worry, I was JUST complaining to my husband how hard it is to do “cutesy-pinterest-inspired” everythings all the time. whew.

    • Haha the song reminds me so much of high school, and I only remember like the first few lines of the chorus. I think my beau is still adjusting to living with me so he hasn’t really complained at all about the mess, he is just thrilled that someone makes all of his meals!

  • My house looks very similar to yours. My dog sheds on everything. (Or my cats do) Right now, I am sitting on my sofa where there is 2 throw blankets from my nap earlier, an open priority mail box with tissue paper stuffed in it, a soda, a hoodie tossed on the back of the sofa and a couple pairs of shoes on the floor next to me from where I kicked them off and forgot about them. I’m not a messy person, my house isn’t dirty, I’m just not Pinterest material! Especially when my dog drags her blankets around the room and Ive not folded that basket of clothes that seems to be growing.

One day I will be an adult. That da is not today

    • Not pinterest material! I love it. Too funny. I’m not a dirty person, just very cluttered. And for the record, since I wrote this post I did clean up the coffee table. But that was mostly because the dog kept jumping up and pulling things off. Thanks for sharing!

  • My house looks just like yours too!! I have major issues cleaning up after myself. There’s a chair in our living room that no one ever sits in because it has jackets, purses, shoes, and other items piled in it. Our sink always has dishes in it. In my bedroom, my laundry basket full of CLEAN clothes has other clothes piled on top of it that I take off when I come home from work. I feel like I’m just so overwhelmed with everything else that when I come home, the last thing I want to do is clean! Once LoLo and I feel more secure in our finances, we are DEFINITELY hiring a cleaning person to come once or twice a month.

    • Hey, my chair is also used as a junk area! Right now the recliner has a backpack, briefcase, scarf, dog harness, and multiple jackets on it. And you definitely aren’t the only one who leaves the clean laundry in the basket until um…always. I could never bring myself to hire someone so I think we will just be slobs until we decide to be real grown ups.

  • I’m 33 and my house is ALWAYS a wreck. I really do try to keep it clean but I have 3 kids so it’s useless. My biggest problem is decorating and making it cozy. Frankly, I want it done but I just don’t want to have to do it or spend the money on things to do it. I’d rather take a vacation than buy decor LOL. I swear it’s my Mom’s fault. I lived in a Pottery Barn house growing up too. My Mom was constantly cleaning. I think it a form of rebellion for me. I’m going with that anyway, sounds better than I’m just a lazy slob!

    • You definitely get a free pass because you have 3 kids. I assume that if (hopefully when) I have 3 kids, that my house will be a disaster. But at least then I’ll have a reason!

  • My boyfriend and I have lived together for a year and a half and CANNOT get on any sort of cleaning/laundry schedule. Don’t feel bad!

    • We originally said that I would do laundry and he would do dishes because those were the chores that we hated less. I still can’t get on a schedule either! I swear every time I go to do laundry there are like 5 loads to do and then I run out of quarters.

  • Thank God I’m not the only one! We’ve been married for two and a half years and I can’t keep our apartment uncluttered to save my life. I often find myself wondering if I’m just terrible at being a girl or if Pinterest is full of lies.

  • This makes me feel so much better about my house! I have a design background and long for my apt to look so put together and cozy, but in reality it looks just like this lol

  • I just stumbled upon your blog, and have to start by saying I absolutely adore you! You have got to be my favorite lifestyle blogger ever. You’re so cute and fun and bouncy but not better than thou or unrealistic. Love that! Second, you really need to check out FlyLady! I LOVE her. She’s especially helpful for getting you motivated to declutter! Seriously, she’s the best (even though she’s a little harpy sometimes and I don’t always have motivation to do the daily tasks). I’ve been married 18 months now and it’s the first thing that really helped us to get in a routine and keep the house clean! (After we got married we moved in with my parents while we built a house, and when we moved in, we went from only one bedroom that was “our space” to 2200 square feet that was all ours! Talk about overwhelming.)
